A Montessori school for ages 2 to 5

A calm Montessori morning, in Spanish and in English

Felt is a small Montessori school in Española with a toddler room and two primary rooms. Guides speak Spanish with the children through the morning, and every family is welcome in Spanish or English.

Two languages

Who speaks what, and when

Each room has its own language through the morning, and every guide speaks both with families. You can ask your question in either language at the door, on the phone, on WhatsApp or in the form.

  • Saray and Adelita speak Spanish with the children in the toddler room and the first primary room through the morning

  • Esaú speaks English with the children in the second primary room

Our rooms

Three rooms, and what a child does in each

  1. A child's hands working the buttons on a cloth dressing frame

    Toddler room

    Ages 2 to 3

    • Hears the names of things on the shelf in Spanish, with a guide close by

    • Sings and listens to a short story with a few friends

    Moving up

When a child is ready for a longer morning and a bigger group, the guides talk with the family about a move to a primary room.

  2. A child's hands fitting wooden shapes into a puzzle board

    Primary room, Spanish morning

    • Counts with bead chains and traces letters in sand

    Moving up

A child stays with the same room and guide through the primary years. In the spring the guides talk with each family about what comes after Felt.

  3. A child's hands turning a wooden screw on a bolt block

    Primary room, English morning

The team

The people in the rooms

Eight adults work at Felt: a director, a guide and an assistant in each room, and a school administrator. Three of the guides are here.

  • Adelita Vallejos, director, beside a sunlit window in a classroom

    Adelita Vallejos

Director and primary guide, Spanish room

Adelita leads Felt and guides the Spanish primary room. She grew up in the Española valley and answers the phone most mornings, so she is the person to ask about a tour.

  • Saray Chavira, toddler room guide, at a low art table in the classroom

    Saray Chavira

    Toddler room guide

Saray guides the toddler room, where a child's first weeks are slow and short. She speaks Spanish with the children and English with families who prefer it.

  • Esaú Islas, primary room guide, kneeling beside an easel in the classroom

    Esaú Islas

    Primary room guide, English morning

Esaú guides the second primary room in English. He gives lessons on the rug and then steps back while children work, and he speaks Spanish with families at the door.

Safety routines

  • Arrival and pickup

A guide meets every child at the door and signs them in. At pickup a child leaves only with the people on your list, and we ask for ID until we know you.

  • Allergies and snacks

Tell us about allergies at the tour and we ask for the details privately once you enroll. Snack is prepared in the room by the children, and we ask families not to send nuts.

  • When a child is ill

A child with a fever or a contagious illness stays home. If a child gets ill at school, we call you right away and a guide stays close until you arrive.

  • Fire drills and headcounts

We practice fire drills and count heads whenever children move between the rooms and the yard.

  • Washing and materials

Children wash their hands at a child-height sink on arrival and before snack, and work materials are wiped between uses.

From families

What families say about the first weeks

“The tour was unhurried. Saray spoke Spanish with our daughter and English with us without making a point of it, and we left knowing how a morning goes.”

Rocío P.Parent of a two-year-old

“The weekly note says what the room worked on, in Spanish and in English, so my parents can follow along too.”

Marcos H.Parent of a three-year-old

“We were nervous about the waitlist. Adelita told us plainly where we stood and when we would hear, and that honesty is why we signed.”

Tamara V.Parent of a four-year-old
